Stockholm isn't Miami

Why waste your money on a 2006, used-up Maxum 4200 SY? Or yet another boring Lexus that lets you down? Over here in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia, a lot of people are crazy about restoring old (wooden) yachts and veteran cars of the 1930s-1970s, even if nurturing such projects often set them back way more than buying new cars and boats would. Why is that so? Perhaps life was better around 1950? Or perhaps not. Personally, I'd say life always has involved hardship and seldom been carefree, but that didn't exactly bother people like Virgil Exner, did it? (Click...

Drowning Doesnt Look Like Drowning
Posted by admin / Under Boating Lake Park
The Instinctive Drowning Response so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or calls for help of any kind. To get an idea of just how quiet and undramatic from the surface drowning can be, consider this: It is the number two cause of accidental death in children, age 15 and under (just behind vehicle accidents) of the approximately 750 children who will drown next year, about...

Boater chases mysterious periscope
Posted by admin / Under Boating Lake Park
Talk about the big one that got away. Ryan Danoff was fishing with two friends about four miles off Hollywood beach Sunday when he spied what appeared to be a mast on the horizon. Funny thing: There was no boat underneath it. Danoff, a Fort Lauderdale fish farmer who's on the water at least three days a week, aimed his 31-foot center console Fishy Business at the mysterious upright and found himself eye to eye with a periscope. "It was crazy," he said. "If it was just myself out there I wouldn't believe what I saw."

Piracy & Firearms: Another View
Posted by admin / Under Boating Lake Park
I was scanning your site, like I do often, and I noticed on the issue of piracy some short comments about using firearms to ward off pirates. One good source of info on modern piracy that many who own yachts may not have ever read is an American magazine called, "Soldier of Fortune". "Soldier of Fortune" magazine, founded and edited by a retired US Army special forces colonel, is known as the only publication to have had a reporter on the ground the entire time during the Russian war in Afghanistan. This magazine is of extreme interest to the yachting...
